PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND FIRST AIDERS AT WORK Minimize

Providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Every employer is responsible for providing suitable personal safety equipment for their employees if they could be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work. PPE may not be required if the risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective.

You can buy PPE from Key Industrial Equipment Ltd.

See 'Workplace health and safety training' for DVDs to train your staff in office and workplace safety.  Includes Introduction to Health & Safety, Office Safety Essentials, and Manual Handling Essentials.

Number of First Aiders required

There are no legal requirements on the number of trained first aiders you need to have in the workplace although rough guidelines dictate:

  • Lower risk sites such as shops and offices should have at least 1 first aider to cover up to 100 employees
  • Medium risk sites such as light engineering and food processing should have at least 1 first aider to cover up to 20 employees and at least 1 more for every additional 50 employees
  • Higher risk sites such as construction and chemical manufacture should have at least 1 first aider to cover up to 5 employees and at least 1 more for every additional 50 employees

In deciding how many first aiders in the workplace you need, consider:

  • workplace hazards and risks
  • the size of the organisation
  • the organisation's history of accidents
  • the nature and distribution of the workforce
  • the remoteness of the site from emergency medical services
  • the needs of travelling, remote and lone workers
  • employees working on shared or multi-occupied sites
  • annual leave and other absences of first aiders and appointed persons

  • Ask about our First Aid Appointed Person Training Courses
Dellivered by The Health & Safety Group, the course lasts 4-6 hours and is for anybody, trained or untrained. The course also meets the minimum legal requirement for an employer to appoint a person to take charge of first aid and emergency aid.

USEFUL HEALTH & SAFETY PUBLICATIONS Minimize

Look out for the Health and Safety Executive publication ‘An introduction to health and safety: health and safety in small businesses

The HSE website also features a 10-point list showing some of the key actions required by law that apply to nearly every business.

By law, you must consult all of your employees on health and safety issues at work.  The HSE publication
Involving your workers in health and safety: A guide for small businesses, aimed mainly at employers with fewer than 25 employees, gives guidance on how this could be done.
